How to Evaluate a Web Design Agency Before You Hire

Your website is your hardest-working salesperson. Choosing the wrong agency to build it is an expensive mistake. Here's what to look for.

Most businesses hire a web design agency based on portfolio aesthetics and price. Both matter — but neither tells you whether the agency will actually deliver results.

The first thing to evaluate is process. How do they handle discovery? Do they ask about your business goals, your customers, your competitors? An agency that jumps straight to design without understanding your business is building a pretty brochure, not a conversion engine.

Ask for references from clients in your industry or of similar size. Ask those references specifically about communication, timelines, and what happened when something went wrong. Every project has friction — what matters is how the agency handles it.

Look at their own website critically. Is it fast? Does it rank? Is the copy compelling? An agency that can't execute for themselves won't execute for you.

Finally, understand the post-launch relationship. Who owns the code? Who handles updates and security patches? What does ongoing support look like? The best agencies build long-term partnerships, not one-and-done deliverables.
